The
house Dating
from around 1847, this large stone-built “maison bourgeoise” – with
its spacious rooms and high ceilings - is located in the heart of the Vendean
The
village Palluau
lies midway between the market town of Challans and the Vendée’s county town
of La Roche-sur-Yon. It
is the chief village of a canton (a group of nine villages). Though
relatively small in population (650 inhabitants) Palluau has always been an
important administrative centre, testified to by elegant houses that were
once homes to local dignitaries, and by the ruins of a historic château.
Today’s amenities include shops, post-office, chemist, church, petrol
station, bank, tourist office, restaurant, bar and fishing lake. There are
also doctors’ and lawyers’ practices. A hypermarket and other large stores
can be found 10 minutes’ drive away, in the small town of Palluau
has plenty of facilities for families, with both primary and middle schools being
within walking distance of the house. The village also has an indoor sports
hall. Accommodation On
the ground floor, the Petit Manoir has a traditional French kitchen, a
dining-room, living-room and utility room with
shower-room leading off it. Glazed doors lead from the hallway to the front
courtyard and to the enclosed rear garden. Floors
are in their original stripped pine, or period floor
tiles. There are fireplaces in five of
the rooms. The
house is on mains drainage, with electricity supply. The roof has been
totally overhauled, and renewed where necessary. Le
Petit Manoir has been entirely re-wired. It has had all windows and doors
replaced. These are now in French oak, with double-glazing; most have
original granite surrounds and lintels. Other
features The
property has an enclosed front courtyard of about 100 sq metres, providing
off-street parking for several vehicles. To one side of this is a quaint little,
free-standing building that was once the wash-house. On
the other side of the courtyard is a “cave” or wine store, a garage and a
large attached barn. This last, with an area of around 40 sq metres and as
high as the house, provides a huge amount of potential storage or workshop
space – or could make extra accommodation if desired. To
the rear is a large, walled garden of some 500 sq metres, mostly down to
grass, with mature shrubs. Backing onto the presbytery garden, it is quiet
and secluded. Road,
rail and air links Palluau
is 25 minutes from some of the Vendée’s most popular coastal resorts, and
less than an hour’s drive from the attractive city of Nantes, with its TGV
station and international airport. (There are local train services to Nantes
from Challans and La Roche-sur-Yon.) TGV
(high-speed) trains from Nantes connect with Eurostar services at Paris or at
Lille-Europe. Regular flights from Nantes-Atlantique airport serve London (Stansted
and Gatwick), East Midlands, Dublin and Shannon; additional summer services
go to Bournemouth, Bristol, Cork and Cardiff. |
